Audi RS1: The New Compact Powerhouse Set to Challenge Mini John Cooper Works

Audi is preparing to launch its latest high-performance compact car, the RS1, set to deliver an impressive 280bhp with four-wheel drive. This eagerly anticipated model will hit the market next year with an expected price of around £30,000.

A Farewell to the Current A1 Generation

The RS1 will serve as a fitting swansong for Audi’s current A1 lineup, preceding the release of the second-generation A1 in 2018. The new model bridges the gap left by the earlier A1 quattro — a limited-run, 258bhp variant of the pre-facelifted A1, which saw just 19 units sold in the UK back in 2012. Unlike its £40,020 predecessor, which was available exclusively as a left-hand drive, the RS1 has been designed as a mainstream production vehicle, catering to both left- and right-hand drive markets.

Competitive Pricing and Market Positioning

While official pricing details are yet to be announced, the RS1 is expected to command a premium over the existing Audi S1, which starts at £26,335. Market speculation suggests the RS1 will exceed £30,000, positioning it competitively within the performance small car segment. Its primary rivals include the Ford Fiesta ST and the Mini John Cooper Works (JCW), the latter of which has been a significant benchmark during the RS1’s development.

Powertrain and Performance Enhancements

At the heart of the RS1 lies Audi’s renowned EA888 engine — a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit. This advanced engine, equipped with Audi’s patented valve lift system for variable camshaft control, is expected to produce approximately 280bhp. This marks a notable increase of 52bhp compared to the current S1, which shares a detuned version of the same engine. Notably, the RS1’s output matches that of the Mini JCW, ensuring a head-to-head competition in terms of raw power.

Buyers can expect a choice between a six-speed manual gearbox and a newly developed seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The automatic option has been engineered to handle torque figures of up to 369lb ft, ensuring robust performance. Like the S1, the RS1 will feature a standard multi-plate clutch four-wheel drive system, offering superior traction and handling.

Acceleration and Top Speed

With enhanced power and torque, the RS1 is projected to outpace the S1’s 0-62mph time of 5.8 seconds. Top speed is anticipated to match the S1’s electronically limited 155mph, making it a serious contender in its class.

Versatility in Design

The RS1 will be available in both three-door and five-door (Sportback) configurations, providing options for practicality and style. This flexibility is expected to broaden its appeal among a wide range of drivers, from enthusiasts seeking compact agility to families requiring extra accessibility.

Looking Ahead: The Second-Generation A1

Following the RS1’s launch, Audi will debut the second-generation A1 in 2018. The new A1 will be built on Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform, replacing the PQ35 underpinnings of the outgoing model. This structural upgrade promises increased rigidity and reduced weight, thanks to a hybrid construction of hot-formed steel and aluminium. Audi has emphasized that these changes will enhance both performance and efficiency, setting a new standard for the compact hatchback segment.
