Tesla has launched the updated version of its Model Y electric SUV in the UK, now available in several variants and featuring notable improvements in range, design, and performance. With the facelifted model, the starting price has dropped to £44,990, making the entry-level option more accessible to a broader range of buyers.
The base Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) version comes equipped with a single 275bhp motor, offering a driving range of up to 311 miles. It can accelerate from 0 to 60mph in just 5.6 seconds, positioning it as a competitive option in the mid-size electric SUV segment.
For those seeking more distance between charges, the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive variant, priced at £48,990, boosts range to an impressive 387 miles. It also gains a more powerful 304bhp motor, trimming the 0-60mph time slightly to 5.4 seconds.
Buyers looking for maximum performance can opt for the Long Range All-Wheel Drive version. This model adds a second motor to the front axle, increasing total output by 66bhp and reducing the 0-60mph sprint to just 4.8 seconds. However, this upgrade comes with a slight trade-off, cutting range by 23 miles compared to its RWD counterpart.
Deliveries for these updated trims are scheduled to begin in June. They follow the earlier release of the £60,990 Launch Series, which began shipping two months prior. The Launch Series is based on the Long Range AWD version but includes unique features such as an Acceleration Boost mode that enables a 0-60mph time of just 4.1 seconds. It also comes with a synthetic suede interior, distinctive badging, and bespoke puddle lights.
Despite strong previous sales, Tesla has confirmed that there are no immediate plans to reintroduce the seven-seat configuration in the updated Model Y.
Internally referred to as Project Juniper, this refreshed Model Y arrives as Tesla navigates mounting competition in key global markets. The new version shares many of its enhancements with the facelifted Model 3 introduced last year, including upgrades in efficiency, comfort, and overall build quality.
One notable departure from the Model 3’s recent update is the return of a traditional indicator stalk on the Model Y. While the Model 3 shifted its indicator controls to the steering wheel, Tesla has retained the more familiar stalk layout in its SUV.
Visually, the revised Model Y sports a more modern exterior, characterised by wraparound light bars at both the front and rear, as well as slightly reshaped bumpers for a sleeker appearance.
As the world’s best-selling electric vehicle, the Model Y remains central to Tesla’s strategy. With this refresh, the company aims to reinvigorate sales and reinforce its position in the increasingly competitive EV landscape.
